Gaming is a lovely from of art. One of the things I look for in a really good game is a interresting or fascinating story. Some stories can only be told through games, and some are just downright awesome. Here are my personal picks for the top ten stories told in gaming. Contains Spoilers.
10 Ocarina Of Time
Let us start with my favorite game of all time. The Zelda series is not a franchise known for its story, but OoT has more of the most memorable moments then most games I can think of: Zeldas flight from Ganondorf, Pulling up the Master Sword, all the moments with Sheik, and the epic ending.
Nuff said.
9 Heavy Rain
This game is here for one simple reason. It is a crime story which is dark as fuck. Lovely told and changes as you do stuff in it. The dark is depressing and fits in well with the hoplessness the characters go through. Still have nightmares over the “So close…” Trpohy.
8 Final Fantasy 10
This is the first great game I played with a major story. It was groundbreaking for me, and I didn’t care for how cheesy it was, or how bad the voiceacting was. The scene at the lake with Yuna and Tidus I still got memorized. I played it recently just to see if I remember it as I want. It didn’t dissapoint one bit.
7 Final Fantasy 7
I love the FF series. Why I can’t argue so much for lately. Probably just memories. I heard so many amazing things about FF7 I just had to check it out. At first it was nothing special really, but then stuff happens, Aeris dies and the whole world is doomed to be hit by a meteor. Lovely!
6 Metal Gear Solid
There is little doubt that the MGS series is hard to keep track with, but thats why there is a free database to download in the PSN store. There are few games that spellbind you as much as the first MGS. The cutscenes lasts hours, true, but they are at least well done and serves a purpose. Without those ridiculus cutscenes and codec sessions you really miss a lot of the game.
5 Mass Effect
Let me start to say that I wanted so bad to put this higher on the list, but I couldn’t :( But out the newer games I’ve played, Mass Effect is by far one of the greatest. The enitre universe (litteraly) is so massive and unbeliveably well done. All of it makes sense in a really weird and awesome kind of way. Where the 2. game is more about the characters, the first is all about the return of the reapers and how to stop them. All great stuff.
4 Star Wars Knights of the Old Repulic
Without a doubt the best Star Wars game out there. Most thanks to its legendary story. The story can change drasticly according to how you deal with the world around you. Shall you be good and help people, or evil and just kill everyone? The story about the re-rise of Darth Revan is compelling and shocking at the same time. The reveal scene when you find out that you actually are Revan is one of the greatest plot twists in gaming. Ever.
3 Final Fantsy 9
Sorry for all the FF games here, put I really had to include this here. This is the game (except OoT) that have left the greatest mark on me. And that is almost all thanks to the story. It is basicly a love story. That said, it is filled with memorable characters, a large and magnificent plot, and the best ending I have ever witnessed. This is epic on a really epic scale.
2 Deus Ex
When talking about stories in gaming it is impossible to not mention the greates FPSRPG out there. A classic in every definition of the word. There are more conspiracies in this game alone than in any other, but it fits soooooo weeeell! Friends become enemies, things you do have lasting effects much later in the game, and there are soooo muuuch to doooo. Soooooo muuuuuch Stuuuuufff!
1 Bioshock
When it comes to gaming as a storyteller, there is NOTHING that comes even close to Bioshock. It have to be a game, or else it wouldn’t work as well. You get a sense of actually becoming a slave as the game goes on. The intro is many times ranked as the greatest the gaming world has to offer. It is magnificent in so many ways, but I will always remember the plot. It is mindblowing and yet it still makes sense. Andrew Ryan makes the game complete. Possibly one of the greates characters ever put in a game, he carries the game on his shoulders alone, and he does it perfect and proud. The scene with him and you alone is the greatest moment in gaming I have ever witnessed. Should something surrpass that my mind will blow. The Big Daddy of storytelling.
